The Philadelphia Experience, or PEX, is a theme that runs through the entire General Education program here at Temple University. PEX allows students to have meaningful encounters with the city and region – its art, culture, politics, economics, people, and neighborhoods – as they progress through the GenEd curriculum. An art course might take students to First Friday to interview an artist. An education course might place them in local schools and community centers. An environmental science course might visit green roofs or community gardens. Whatever the variation, the theme remains constant: real experience, integrated in some way with coursework. We know that people learn best when they can make connections between the material they are studying and their own real world experiences. When the context for hands-on learning is the city and the region, our students are likely to reach higher levels of academic achievement.
