The Fulbright U.S. Student Program provides funding to conduct research or creative projects, pursue graduate study, or teach English abroad. During their grants, Fulbrighters will meet, work, live with and learn from the people of the host country, sharing daily experiences. The program facilitates cultural exchange through direct interaction on an individual basis in the classroom, field, home, and in routine tasks, allowing the grantee to gain an appreciation of others’ viewpoints and beliefs, the way they do things, and the way they think. Through engagement in the community, the individual will interact with their hosts on a one-to-one basis in an atmosphere of openness, academic integrity, and intellectual freedom, thereby promoting mutual understanding.

Institutional Nomination

Fulbright expects all applicants who are currently enrolled to be evaluated by their home university. Recent alumni have the option to apply “at large” without evaluation, but Temple University encourages alumni to apply through Temple and be evaluated. See below for the Temple Fulbright timeline and deadlines.

Eligibility and Selection Criteria

Applicants must be citizens or nationals of the United States of America at the time of application. Permanent residents are not eligible. Please review the Ineligibility section in relation to the eligibility of dual citizens.
Applicants must have a conferred bachelor's degree or equivalent before the start of the grant.
Applicants must meet the language requirements of the award to which they are applying and demonstrate sufficient competency to complete their project and adjust to life in the host country.
Applicants may hold a J.D. at the time of application. Applicants must not have a Ph.D. in hand at the time of application.

Temple Fulbright Timeline

The dates below reflect our general timeline. Please contact Barbara Gorka (barbara.gorka@temple.edu) to be added to the Temple Fulbright Canvas site. This is where you will find a more detailed timeline along with many other Fulbright resources.

April: Fulbright competition typically opens in late March or early April. Create an account in the Fulbright application portal, and list Temple as your home university. This is a recommended (not required) deadline.

May and June: Brainstorm and begin to write. Have a draft? Meet with Fellowships Advising to review it. Speak to letter writers. For Research/Study/Arts students, start exploring possible mentors abroad. These are strong recommendations, not requirements.

June 15: Draft 1 Target. Submit a draft of your Statement of Grant Purpose for review by Fellowships Advising. This is a recommended (not required) deadline.

June 30: Submit “unofficial official” transcripts to the Fulbright application portal. This is a recommended (not required) deadline.

July to Early August: Draft 2 Target. Submit drafts of your Statement of Grant Purpose and Personal Statement. This is a recommended (not required) deadline.

Early to mid-August:  Preliminary deadline (Draft 3 Target). Submit the following application materials and receive feedback from Fellowships Advising and campus readers. This is a strongly recommended (not required) deadline.

List of three people you have asked to serve as a reference. Indicate how they know you and what unique qualities or experiences they are likely to write about in a sentence or two.
Short essays: Abstract of the Statement of Grant Purpose; Host country engagement; Brief explanation of your future plans upon returning to the U.S.

Personal Statement

Early September:  Official campus deadline for Temple applicants. The completed application, including all supporting documents, must be in the Fulbright on-line application system.  Be sure to give your references this deadline, not the national deadline. Must also complete the Temple Waiver. This is a required deadline. Only candidates who meet the campus deadline are eligible for campus evaluation.

September:  Campus Interviews. The campus committee will evaluate your application based on a review of your materials and a 20-minute interview. The committee completes a campus evaluation, which is submitted with your application. You will be able to revise your Fulbright application as much as you would like after your interview, up until the national deadline.

Early to mid-October: National Deadline.

November-December:  National screening committees meet to review applications.

Late January:  Results of national screenings announced (if you are named a semifinalist, your application is forwarded to the host country for review).

Spring:  Final results from individual country programs announced between March and early May (most semifinalists will hear their results between mid-March and late-April).
