Genomic Medicine Major

My name is Anya (she/her) and I'm a senior Genomic Medicine major. If I'm not on campus, there's a good chance I'm up at Lewis Katz School of Medicine doing research in the Aging + Cardiovascular Discovery Center. I work in the Elrod Lab, where I've studied the mitochondria since my freshman year.

For two years, I studied calcium transport in the mitochondria and its impact in neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's. Currently, for my Honors thesis, I'm investigating altered metabolic phenotypes and disrupted calcium-handling mitochondrial machinery in acute myeloid leukemia. My first experience in a lab was actually entomology research (bugs!) at the University of Maryland, which is when I realized I wanted to pursue research!

I've participated in lots of programs at Temple, including Diamond Research Scholars, Diamond Peer Teaching, the Frances Velay Fellowship, and study abroad at Temple Rome. Post-grad, I hope to do research abroad, and eventually pursue a PhD in Biomedical Sciences. Outside of academics and research, I love traveling and seeing live theater!
